Rounds 5 and 6 of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, Sachsenring Germany.

As soon as Rory arrived at Sachsenring and viewed the track he knew he was going to like riding here. With its elevation changes, technical complex section and its fast and flowing bends, it had all the qualities which make it so good to ride.

FP1 was spent as usual, learning the track, lines and improving.

FP2 was more of the same but with more pace honing his riding and finding a better set up for the bike before qualifying.

QUALIFYING:

Started well with an improvement on lap times and pushing up towards the top 10. On lap six Rory entered the pits to have a change made to the bike, as he was exiting pit lane another rider lost control as he braked into turn 1, his bike careered towards Rory as he neared the pit exit, collecting him and his bike, side swiping Rory and bike knocking him to the ground: luckily there was no injury to Rory or the other rider but the bike was too badly damaged to continue and that was Rory’s qualifying over, when the flag went out Rory had been nudged back down to 21st on the grid.

RACE 1:

Rory himself admitted he was a bit disappointed with how race 1 panned out. “I got held up in the first lap when I had to avoid a fallen rider in front, I lost a lot of ground to the group of riders I was with and was unable to close back in on them.”

He did however dig in and finished 18th, more importantly learning for the next race.

RACE 2:

New day, new start, Rory put behind him the qualifying and race one gremlins and knuckled down to try and score some points this time out.

Lining up on the grid, he pinned it off the line and down into turn 1 gaining several positions, over the next few laps he steadily worked his way up the field to 11th where he led a group of 5 riders, holding his position for the remainder of the race, scoring 5 points and finishing with his best result so far in the Rookies Cup races.

Rory’s next race is with Racing steps foundation riding the KRP Honda at Motorland Aragon in the RFME CEV Moto3 Spanish National Championship on 25-26th July.
